Lina Bo Bardi's iconic design celebrates 70th birthday

When she designed her 1951 Bowl Chair, Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi envisioned a seat that was flexible in structure and universal and essential in form. The design - a hemispherical seat shell resting lightly on a metallic ring structure supported by four legs - still impresses 70 years later with its harmonious appearance and proves to be absolutely timeless.

Human design
For its time, the design was revolutionary and changed the way people sat. Unlike the prevailing upright chairs with their angular shapes, the design invited a more natural and relaxed posture that was more about being than appearing. In short, Lina Bo Bardi put people and human interaction at the center of her design, introducing a new perspective to the design world of the 1950s. Today, the Bowl Chair is handcrafted by Italian furniture brand Arper in a limited edition of 500 pieces and in collaboration with the Instituto Lina Bo e P.M. Bardi.

Celebratory tribute
While her iconic design celebrates its 70th birthday, 2021 will also honor the architect herself, who died in São Paulo in 1992. During the official opening of the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale on May 22, 2021, Lina Bo Bardi has already been awarded a Golden Lion for lifetime achievement in memoriam. ns
